Tall Ship "Guayas" at anchor in Zihuatanejo Bay
The whole town marveled for days back in August of 1999 at this tall ship when it visited us from Ecuador. The Ecuadorian Navy trains future sailors on this beauty named "Guayas".
Sea turtle hatchlings at La Ropa Beach, Zihuatanejo
Freshly hatched sea turtles race for the ocean at dusk on La Ropa Beach. Some hotels and restaurants protect the eggs until they hatch then release them at dusk to give them a better chance of survival against predators.

Majahua Scenic Road is between Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. The beach here has big waves and dangerous undertow. A passing ship can barely be seen on the horizon. Notice the lush vegetation.

Calle Adelita, Colonia La Madera, Zihuatanejo
A favorite neigborhood with visitors for its lodgings and its restaurants is Colonia La Madera, east of the downtown area. This photo is looking west on Calle Adelita near one of the footbridges that crosses La Boquita Canal.

The black-crowned night heron is a common sight at our municipal pier in the evenings. Locally we know it as a macaco. They are terrific fishermen.

Barra de Potosí
Seafood restaurants line the beach at the mouth of the lagoon in Barra de Potosí, a small fishing village south of Zihuatanejo in the Municipio de Petatlán.
Hotels and condominiums in Ixtapa
Hotels and condominiums line El Palmar Beach in Ixtapa. Part of Palma Real Golf Course can be seen where the palm trees are just to the right of center in the photo.
Escuela Primaria Vicente Guerrero, Zihuatanejo
Until it was demolished in October 2017, this was Zihuatanejo's oldest school whose construction began in 1939. It's first generation graduated in 1948.

Students wash their desks in the lagoon that used to exist next to the Escuela Primaria Vicente Guerrero. This photo was taken around 1970. The lagoon was destroyed when a canal was built to drain the area for urban development.

Waterfall at Mesas de Bravo, Sierra de Zihuatanejo
In the mountains of Zihuatanejo there is a small village called Mesas de Bravo, an eco-tourism destination with waterfalls and natural pools. A great place to spend the day!
Wave Machine, Playa La Saladita, La Unión
The region is popular for surfing, and less than an hour's drive northwest from Zihuatanejo is a place known among surfers as The Wave Machine at Playa La Saladita near Lagunillas in the Municipio de La Unión Montes de Oca.

The main plaza on the waterfront of downtown Zihuatanejo is the center of activity and a longtime traditional gathering place for families, residents and visitors.

The gazebo at the zócalo is called a kiosko. It's not uncommon to see older couples there doing a traditional dance called Danzón.

During the parade for Mexico's Día de la Revolución on November 20 you might see the traditional dance called Danza de los Manueles.
Marina Ixtapa
Marina Ixtapa is located at the northwestern end of Ixtapa Boulevard. Fine shops and restaurants are located along its waterfront.

Fishing charters, excursions and tours are possible at Marina Ixtapa.
Porto Ixtapa
One of the luxury developments at Marina Ixtapa is called Porto Ixtapa. This is the view from their clubhouse.
